Dr Sheital Chand

An experienced specialist with strong ties to the outer east.

Dr Chand obtained her FRACP in Gastroenterology in 2023, then completed hepatology fellowships at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, including the WA Liver Transplant Service, and at King's College Hospital, London.

She has worked on clinical trials of new antiviral and liver cancer treatments, and is a GESA-recertified colonoscopist with an adenoma detection rate well above the national standard.

Her care is holistic: thorough management plans and clear education so patients understand their condition. She also holds a public appointment at Werribee Mercy Hospital.

Conditions & procedures

All general gastroenterology referrals are welcome, including:

Colonoscopy & gastroscopy

Dr Chand performs both examinations herself, as day procedures at Knox and Ringwood Private Hospitals.

Colonoscopy

Bowel camera examination

A thin, flexible camera is used to look at the lining of the bowel. Dr Chand can remove polyps or take biopsies during the same examination, so you usually don't need a second procedure.

  • Done under sedation — most people remember nothing of it
  • Usually a day procedure: you generally go home the same day
  • A bowel prep (clear fluids and a laxative) is needed the day before
  • You'll need a friend or family member to drive you home

Dr Chand is a GESA-recertified colonoscopist with an adenoma detection rate well above the national standard — meaning polyps are less likely to be missed.

Gastroscopy (upper GI endoscopy)

Oesophagus, stomach & duodenum

A camera is passed gently down the throat to look at the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small bowel. Biopsies, dilation and other treatments can be done at the same time.

  • Sedation is given through a drip in your hand or arm
  • The examination itself usually takes 10–20 minutes
  • Nothing to eat or drink for about 6 hours beforehand
  • You'll need someone to take you home after sedation

Common reasons include reflux, difficulty swallowing, coeliac testing, unexplained iron deficiency and persistent indigestion.

Also performed

  • Polypectomy (polyp removal)
  • Biopsies
  • Oesophageal dilation
  • Bleeding control
  • Feeding tube placement
  • Band ligation
